Statsraad Lehmkuhl visits Newport January 5-8 2022

Newport is a small town 139 nautical miles north of the harbor in New York City, barely 260 kilometers. Statsraad Lehmkuhl continues to Newport after being moored in New York through Christmas, to change crews and get new supplies before crossing the Atlantic Ocean again.

Newport is a popular resort town. Both President Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy had summer houses here.

The city is known for its stately old buildings from when the United States was an English colony, and has a long sailing history. Between 1930 and 1983, this is where the America's Cup regatta was held.

There is a naval base near the city, and it is this and tourism that keeps the 25,000 inhabitants busy.
